Ezra Collective: KCRW Live from HQ
Intimate performances, fresh sounds, and candid conversations with a view.
London-based quintet Ezra Collective inhabits The Annenberg Performance Studio as though it were their neighborhood jazz bar. Rapturous live interpretations of compositions from their 2022 album Where I’m Meant To Be — including “Victory Dance,” “Welcome To My World,” and “Smile” — are in the mix. Sonorous bass, extended jams, and love for the grand piano abound.
Drummer and bandleader Femi Koleoso, along with his brother (and the band’s bassist) TJ Koleoso also take a beat to drop some serious knowledge on Novena Carmel: How they make their music using “the slingshot effect — the further you go back [in time/influence], the further you can propel forward;” taking drum lessons from Afro-beat pioneer Tony Allen; and the vast sonic legacy they find themselves within.
